Interesting Leadership Resources

Hey folks. Its that time of year when I give my favourite 200 Leadership links in ONE giant leadership post! Oh yes!

Ok, Here are my 200 favourite leadership resources: 3..2..1.. Go!

1. True leaders influence others to grow. Someone who has experienced a true leaders helping hand will have growth for years to come. A true leader has a way of instilling confidence in others. A true leader looks for others strengths and helps develop them even more. A true leader takes others weaknesses and turns them around. Imagine running into someone that you had the privilege of working with, mentoring, years down the road. You listen to them share how their lives have grown and continue to grow all because of some part that you had in their lives. When you put others first, it is a privilege to share in their growth. Your influence truly will have an impact for years to come.

in the long run as your employees become more efficient, more productive, and more effective. They will require less supervision–which brings us to principle number three.

Organizational Leadership Principle Number Three – It is about the organization.

There are unethical and misguided bosses who think the organization exists to support them. This arrogance ultimately brings failure. We come together in associations or businesses to accomplish something that we could not accomplish alone. Your employees give you t

not the organization itself.

Investing your ego and ambition in your job is fine–to a point. In the extreme, this creates an overbearing autocrat. The truly effective leader knows he or she is an active member within the team and always works to better the team. Real leaders have a forward looking orientation and work to build the culture of their group. It is the insecure leader who wants their successor to fail.

Without Washington’s intervention, America may very well have become a kind of banana republic, at the mercy of thousands of armed and angry soldiers and their officers. And it wasn’t his speech that did it, it was a Leadership Talk.

2. True leaders aren’t in it for the glory or for the popularity. Being a true leader isn’t always easy. There are days when it seems that everything is going wrong and you wonder if you are getting through at all. Some employees will not appreciate the high standards that you have for them. Ever had those days? Nothing seems to be going right. But then, there is a light at the end of tunnel and being a true leader can have its rewards. Perhaps you hear a “thank you”, or perhaps an employee that has been struggling to achieve his success finally has a break through and gives you his 100%. A true leader does whatever it takes to help others with their accomplishments.

After Washington left the hut, the officers unanimously voted to “continue to have unshaken confidence in the justice of the Congress and their country ….” The result was that the Continental Army disbanded without incident after the War formally ended a few months later and thereby set in motion the peaceful events that led to the creation of the Constitution.

As Maj. Samuel Shaw, who was present, wrote in his journal, “There was something so natural, so unaffected in this appeal as rendered it superior to the most studied oratory. It forced its way to the heart, and you might see sensibility moisten every eye.”

3. True leaders must be trustworthy. It truly is a rare thing to find a leader/employer who truly cares about his employees. Some leaders aren’t looking out for their employee’s best interest. Some leaders are just money hungry. Some leaders just want others to make them look good so they can pat themselves on the back. A true leader leads with his heart, not with selfishness. Imagine a work place where the true leader is respected and therefore every employee wants to give their absolute best. The atmosphere in that work place would be absolutely amazing! Show that you are trustworthy and you will earn the respect of others.

The deep, human, emotional power of that moment can hardly be described. It electrified the officers. Here was their commander who had never taken a furlough during his eight years of command, who had faced storms of musketry fire, who through his daring and intelligence had kept the Army in tact in what most of the world thought was a lost cause, here was George Washington modestly asking his officers to bear with him in an all-too-human failing. It was an astonishing turning point.

On the ides of March in 1783, dozens of officers, representing every company in the army, met in a log hut to vote on taking this action when George Washington suddenly and unexpectedly walked in. He gave a speech denouncing the rebellious course they were on. But it wasn’t the speech that carried the day; it was the Leadership Talk at the end of the speech. Witnesses report that Washington’s speech left many officers unconvinced, and when he was finished, there was much angry muttering among them. To bolster his case, the general pulled out a letter he recently received from a member of the Continental Congress. As he began reading, his usual confident air gave way to hesitancy.

Then, unexpectedly, he drew out a spectacle case from his pocket. Few officers had ever seen him put on spectacles. Usually a severely formal man, he said in a voice softened with apology: “Gentlemen, you will permit me to put on my spectacles, for I have not only grown gray but almost blind in the service of my country.

Being a support to others is a great way to show your true leadership. Think about ways you can influence those that you are leading in a positive way. Acknowledge a job well done. Absolutely everyone appreciates hearing about a job well done. Offer business incentives. If an employee is not late for an entire month, reward them with a gift card to a restaurant. If you would like to see an increase in sales volume, offer a contest where the rewards is a travel certificate for a free stay at a hotel. Remember, you will hear for years to come stories of others continued growth – all because you took the time to lead with your heart and not selfishness.

The Leadership Talk is a much more effective means of leadership communication. If Washington hadn’t given a Leadership Talk in the log hut with this assembled officers, who were on the verge of revolt, the Revolution would have ended right then and there; and the history of America would have been far different.

As to what was at stake at that moment in history: This occurred a year and a half after the battle of Yorktown. Popular misconception has the Revolutionary War ending at that battle. However, in reality, the War continued to drag on; and as it did, the Continental Army became increasingly rebellious. Most of the troops hadn’t been paid in at least two years. Their promised pensions were not forthcoming. Popular sentiment in the army was gathering to overthrow the Continental Congress and install a military government.

Leadership lessons come in many guises. One unforgettable lesson comes from George Washington and his contribution to the most important victory of the Revolutionary War.

That victory occurred neither at Saratoga or Yorktown but in a log hut in 1783 with a few heartfelt words that literally changed the world. And it’s not just a history lesson, it’s a leadership lesson — for all leaders.

dership role. It is not enough to occupy a position of leadership (as defined by a box on the organization chart with your name on it). In fact, many people have made the choice to lead, exercising vast influence, without being in a so-called “leadership” position. In making the choice to lead, you take responsibility for yourself first, which means you must commit to w

To realize what took place in that hut and its historical importance, we must understand what a Leadership Talk is and what was at stake at that moment in 1783 for America?

As to the Leadership Talk: There’s a big difference between speeches/presentations on one hand and Leadership Talks on the other. Whereas a speech or a presentation communicates information, Leadership Talks do something more: It establishes a deep, human, emotional connection with the audience.
